Ja Nein Doch Meaning & Übung

Today we will understand one of the most simple yet confusing concept JA, Nein Doch. Here I will explain you meaning along with examples. At the end, I have provided exercise which you can practice.

Here is simplest possible definition for difference in Ja, Nein, Doch.

“Ja” is used when question is affirmative/positive and answer is also positive.
When question is negative and answer is also negative then we use “Nein”.
When question is in negative but answer is in positive then we use “doch”.

Example: Kann sie schreiben?- Ja, sie kann schreiben. OR Nein, sie kann nicht schreiben.

Kann sie nicht schreiben? Doch, sie kann schreiben.

Different Meanings of DOCH In German

One of the simplest meaning has already been discussed above. Now let’s see more meaning & uses of DOCH in German language.

1) Revert Negative Frage (question) oder Aussage (Statement)

First case where Doch is used is to revert or counter negative statement or question. Let’s understand this by an example:

Frage: Mohan kommst du nicht aus Indien? (Mohan aren’t you from India?)

Antwort: Doch, ich komme aus Indien. (Yes, I come from India.)

Statement: Ich habe leider nicht Kuli/Stift. (Unfortunately I don’t have a pen.)

—Suddenly you remember, you have a pen—

Antwort: oh, ich habe doch Kuli. (Oh, I do have a pen.)

2) Makes Command or statement very angry

Second case where you can use Doch is to make your statement or command angry.

Eg: Das kann doch nicht sein. (That can’t be true.)

3) Assume Other Person already have Information

Other use of Doch is when you already have informed about a circumstance to other person & when statement of question is given, when assume that other person already knew it.

Eg: Sollen wir jetzt nicht essen? (Shouldn’t we eat now?)

(I have already told that I have stomach ache)

Antwort: Nein, ich habe doch bauch schmerzen. (No, I do have stomach ache.)

4) Makes Order More Convincing

In this case, use of Doch softens the tone of order that we give and makes it more convincing.

For eg: Ich will nicht mitkommen. (I don’t want to come along.)

(My friends convinces me)

Ah, Komm doch mit. (Ah, come along./ Ah, why don’t you come along?)
