Nebensatz mit weil: Uses of weil in German grammar

In German, weil ist used to explain reason of any question or statement. If you were asked question starting with “Warum” then your answer will start with weil.

Weil is a subordinate conjunction, which means while using weil in sentence, word order will be changed. It is translated as “because” in German and is most frequently used in day-to-day conversation and writing.

It connects two sentences, one Hauptsatz (main clause) and the other Nebensatz(subordinate clause). Nebensatz shows the reason of Haupsatz. The verb position is at the end while using weil as a conjunction. In other words, while taking position of the verb so main verb is forced to move at the end in conjugated form.

You can use weil in the middle of a sentence as well as at the beginning of the sentence. When you start a sentence with weil, the other part of the sentence must start with the verb. Let’s see a few examples to understand this better.

Eg: Ich esse Pizza. Ich liebe Pizza.

Ich esse Pizza, weil ich pizza liebe. {notice verb at end} (I eat Pizza because I love Pizza)

Start sentence with weil

If the sentence starts with weil- verb of first sentence at the end and starts the second sentence with verb first. Don’t forget the comma. Let’s see an example for this:

Eg: (i)Ich esse Pizza. Ich liebe Pizza.

Weil ich liebe Pizza, esse ich Pizza. (Because I love Pizza, I eat Pizza)

(ii) Ich arbeite nicht. Ich bin krank. (weil)

Ich arbeite nicht, weil ich krank bin. (I’m not working because I’m sick.)

Weil ich krank bin, arbeite ich nicht. (Because I am ssick, I am not working)

Use weil as conjunction

In above Paragraph, we have learnt that while using “weil“, verb at second position always goes at the end. Let’s see this concept with examples in different types of sentences.

(i) Ich liebe cricket (I love cricket) Ich kann cricket spielen. ( I can play cricket)

Ich liebe cricket, weil ich cricket spielen kann. [Modal Verb takes 2nd position, so it is at the end]

Weil ich cricket spielen kann, liebe ich cricket.

(ii) Ich lerne Deutsch (I learn German) Ich möchte nach Deutschland reisen (I want to travel Germany)

Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich nach Deutschland reisen möchte.

Weil ich nach Deutschland reisen möchte, lerne ich Deutsch.

(iii)Ich spiele mit Ishika (I am playing with Ishika) I habe zeit (I have time)

Ich spiele mit Ishika, weil ich zeit habe.

Weil ich zeit habe, spiele ich mit Ishika.

(iv) Ich bin zur Schule gegangen ( I went to school) Ich musste lernen ( I have to study)

Ich bin zur Schule gegangen, weil ich lernen musste.

Weil ich lernen musste, bin ich zur Schule gegangen.
